Castlegar, BC

The name Castlegar is believed to have originated from settlers from Ireland, Caslean Gearr, meaning "the short castle", dwelled. Close to the Canada/US Border, Castlegar offers visitors a huge backyard for adventures and explorations.

Delve into the town's history and Doukhobor heritage. The Doukhobor Village showcases over 1,000 artifacts representing the customs, religion, and timeless arts and crafts of the people. Guided tours are available. Cross the 144-m (473-ft.) long suspension bridge from Castlegar over to Zuckerberg Island, which dates back over 3,500 years from when the Lakes Salish people made their winter home here, to the early 1900s when Alexander Zuckerberg came over from Russia and built the Russian Orthodox Chapel House. A 15-minute walk around the island will uncover many hidden treasure such as the Hiroshima Memorial garden; Kekuli, a reconstructed Lake Salish winter pit house; Stump Woman, a carving by Alexander Zuckerberg; and the water wheel. Keep you binoculars handy as you head towards the west side of Zuckerberg Island as you may see blue heron, sandpipers, ducks, and osprey.

Visit the Castlegar Museum, housed in a CPR station over 90 years old, and explore the collection of artifacts and local memorabilia. The second floor of the building is done up as the station agent’s residence with displays of aged tools, kitchen utensils, and army uniforms. Located on Highway 3, Castlegar is 616 km (385 mi.) east of Vancouver.
